Gold Foil
- Hardness: Rockwell B57 (Soft)
Since it’s thin and easy to cut, as well as highly conductive and corrosion resistant, this 99.99% pure gold foil is often used to plate electrical connectors that are exposed to the air. It’s also good for making parts that stay accurate in extreme environments because it has a high melting point, low thermal resistance, and won’t oxidize. An alternative to platinum, gold is more conductive, but has a lower melting point. Use it to make gaskets, even for high-vacuum applications, since it is soft enough to create a good seal when pressed between two flanges, but won’t damage the flanges so you can reuse them.
